New standards for processed meat in Türkiye
Türkiye's Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has published a new food codex communiqué on meat and meat products. It bans adding soy and starch to raise weight, prohibits smoking and adding peanuts or cheese to sucuk, pastırma and kavurma, cuts the fat ceiling for poultry mixtures from 20% to 15%, and requires the döner type to be stated on the label. Existing producers have until 31 March 2027 to comply.
What it means for you
If you import processed meat from Türkiye, ask your supplier directly whether the product meets the new communiqué or the old one — and name the new communiqué in your contract specification. The transition means both will be on the market until next March.
